Today’s guest post comes from Poi and Kirsty, the couple behind the site No Place to Be.

Poi and Kirsty are a young English couple who have spent the last eight months travelling China and South East Asia. They’ve actually fallen in love with the area so much they are planning on settling down in Bangkok for a year, using the time to explore and trying to figure out which area of the world they want to hit up next.

A Taste of Home

One of our most memorable moments was when we visited Saigon in Vietnam. We had been on the road for around three months in a whirlwind adventure, always on the move and filling our time doing anything we could to see more of a place. Needless to say we were pretty worn out by this point and in need of some home comfort.

Being English we decided the best way to get our fix was with a Sunday Roast Dinner.  We were staying in backpacker central, a couple of alleyways filled with cheap guesthouses and backpacker cafes. One in particular had an English owner advertising a Real Sunday Roast.  It kept catching our eye.

By the time Sunday came around, we were very excited to get our hands on some roast potatoes and stuffing. We arrived at the cafe and proudly announced what we wanted.  It turns out everyone had the same idea, and we would have to wait a while to even get a seat.

Not being put off, we waited downstairs with a drink and eventually a table was available.  We ordered our Sunday dinner and waited in the tiny upstairs room with one small window, full of groups of English backpackers all filling their faces.

A Unique Ambience to the Meal

Our dinner arrived shortly before all the power went out down the street. It was mid evening so with no natural light we sat in complete darkness, the hot meals all around turning the cramped space into an uncomfortable sauna.

However, no one cared, barely able to see the plate in front of my face and with no view of Kirsty at all, we chowed down to one of the best meals I have ever had. Sweating and very full, my now adjusted eyes could see a very content Kirsty sitting the other side of the table.

This summed up to me how much me and everyone else had changed with a bit of travelling.  Back home this would have been the restaurants fault and chaos would have commenced. To us though, it was perfect, no lights, boiling hot but damn good food – the backpacker experience.
